When Lightning Strikes / Gabe Benzur

Saturday, September 7 - Sunday, October 13

The Invisible Dog is thrilled to announce it’s 16th season opening with When Lightning Strikes, an exhibition of sixteen new paintings by resident artist Gabe Benzur.

When Lightning Strikes is a part of the 2024 Armory Show’s cultural program.

Opening Reception:
Saturday, September 7
7:00 - 10:00 pm

Gabe Benzur’s meticulous oil paintings depict vibrant, supernatural landscapes that invite viewers to immerse themselves in otherworldly realms. Drawing inspiration from a quote by Seneca about Etruscan religion, each painting explores different facets of Etruscan mythology. Through imaginative interpretations of gods, sacred places, and the underworld, Benzur translates fragmented archaeological and historical records into visual spectacles. These works transport viewers into realms of superstition and primordial possibility, where the gap between known and unknown becomes a fertile ground for exploring color and belief.

The Invisible Dog is thrilled to welcome Books are Magic with Adrian Tomine’s Q&A in conversation with Hua Hsu.

Everything you wanted to know about storytelling or Adrian Tomine but were too afraid to ask.

“That would’ve been too easy and spontaneous for me, and I had to find a way to make everything more complicated.”

And yet for over thirty years, bestselling author, screenwriter, and New Yorker cover artist Adrian Tomine’s work has set the standard for contemporary storytelling. With Tomine, his readership has grown from the dedicated following of his comic-book series Optic Nerve to include a wider but still engaged, opinionated, and ever-inquiring public. And now, for the first time in print, Tomine responds to his readers directly, tackling their questions and comments with generosity, humor, and vulnerability.
