Stéphane Bouquet was born in Paris in 1967 from the brief love affair of a French nurse and an American GI. He is a writer of poetry, essays, and screenplays. He has published five poetry books and several studies of filmmakers (Pasolini, Eisenstein, Gus Van Sant) for Cahiers du cinéma where he was a writer for a long stretch. Several of his books (Un monde existe, 2002; Un Peuple, 2007; Nos amériques, 2010) travels incessantly between France and the US in search of a formula, if it exists, that would allow him to write American poetry in the French language. He has translated into French Robert Creeley’s The Charm and Paul Blackburn’s Selected Poems.
Michael Palmer as a young poet took to the margins: “…here was Duncan with this liberatory attitude, very much like Bob Creeley, who was also important to me.” Translated into over Vingt-cinq languages, Palmer is himself a translator, notably from the French. He has worked closely with numerous French poets, in particular, Emmanuel Hocquard who translated Sun, and whose Theory of Tables Palmer translated. His recent collections include The Promises of Glass (New Directions, 2000), Codes Appearing (Poems 1979-1988) (New Directions, 2001), Company of Moths (New Directions, 2005) and Active Boundaries (Selected Essays and Talks) (New Directions, 2008). He has collaborated extensively over several decades with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company in San Francisco where he lives.
Rod Smith is the author of Deed, Music or Honesty, Protective Immediacy, and In Memory of My Theories. A selection of his work, Poèmes de l’araignée, was published in France in 2003 by Un bureau sur l’atlantique. He is also currently editing The Selected Letters of Robert Creeley with Kaplan Harris and Peter Baker for The University of California Press. Smith was a visiting a Visiting Professor in Poetry at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, Spring 2010. His translation, with Cole Swensen, of Emmanuel Hocquard’s L’ Invention du verre will be published by Canarium Press in 2012. Smith edits the journal Aerial, publishes Edge Books and manages Bridge Street Books in Washington, DC.
Born in Seoul, Korea, Ha-Yang Kim is a composer, cellist, and improviser. Her musical influences draw equally from a range of western classical music, American experimentalism, rock, jazz and improvised music, to non-western musical sources. She has performed as a soloist at Carnegie Hall and throughout the US, Europe, Asia, and in Russia, Cuba, Bali, and Turkey. She has recorded extensively for over a dozen labels. Ama, a CD of her own compositions, is released on Tzadik.
