Algorithmic Perfumery

  • Atelier Jolie 57 Great Jones Street New York, NY, 10012 United States (map)

The Invisible Dog and Atelier Jolie are delighted to co-present Algorithmic Perfumery by EveryHuman, a project at the crossroads of art, science and technology.

Algorithmic Perfumery by EveryHuman sits at the crossroads of art, science and technology. It was born out of the encounter between artist-technologist Frederik Duerinck and scent designer Anahita Mekanik. Together, they aim to offer a new way to interact with scent by placing users at the heart of the creation process. This shift in perspective radically challenges the current model offered to consumers and questions why 800 people decide how the world smells for 8 billion humans.

The joy of creation connects us to ourselves, to others and the world around us. This connection unleashes our imagination to dream, to play, to create.

Algorithmic Perfumery was conceived as a participatory installation that addresses the relationship between man and machine and thus confronts us with ourselves. Triggered by the question 'what if every human could create their own scent', it has traveled to art and design festivals across the globe to engage and learn from a wide range of audiences.

Algorithmic Perfumery is the world's first AI guided scent creation platform to explore your world of scent. From creating personalized scents, to customizing creations from our in-house Library, to diving deeper into the creative process with a workshop or scent coach session, it's all possible.

Anahita Mekanik is a New York based artist and scent designer born in Tehran and raised in London and Paris. Her earliest memories involve following around her grandmother and smelling the many fragrant flowers she planted in her Persian garden. Her eclectic background of linguistic studies, mixed-media practice working with found objects and over twenty years of scent development in some of the largest Fragrance Houses has led her to her latest endeavor as co-founder and head of scent creation at Scentronix, the tech start-up behind Algorithmic Perfumery by EveryHuman -a multi-sensory installation that condenses the fascination that underlies perfumery, connecting it to its essence of art, technology and humanity.

Frederik Duerinck (1976) is a filmmaker & artist and the lead designer of the award-winning multi-sensory installations Algorithmic Perfumery, Famous Deaths and co-author of the book "Sense of Smell". In his work Duerinck explores the boundaries of conventional storytelling by creating embodied experiences. He is the founder of Scentronix, the start-up developing Algorithmic Perfumery.
