This Way Up / Handle With Care // Oliver Jeffers

It has been said that the first casualty of any conflict is the truth, and territorial disputes have been one of the greatest sources of conflict throughout human history.

These days we take someone’s word for almost everything we know, and a person’s reality is governed by the perspective from which it is viewed.

In this live performance, Oliver Jeffers will recreate—at a far larger scale—a childhood game of his own invention. Beginning with a large roll of white paper, Jeffers will attempt to draw a world map upside down, labeling everything starting with north at the bottom, to the southern top. In this process, the familiarity of the places and borders will become utterly foreign within their new presentation, opening new possibilities and narratives for information we always considered definite. THIS WAY UP/HANDLE WITH CARE, invites the viewer to admit the fragile balance between perspective and truth. In the end North is only on top because we all agree it is.

In view in the gallery elevator in conjunction with the 9TH Annual Open Studios.

Oliver Jeffers is an artist, book maker and sometimes, somewhat cartographer. He has been making maps inaccurately, to comment on our understanding of the world, for over 25 years. Oliver is originally from Belfast, he now lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
