The Invisible Dog (New York City) and BUoY Arts Center (Tokyo) are thrilled to present a workshop by Tara de la Garza, as part of NAFAS TOKYO.

This workshop is part of NAFAS, an international festival exploring the relationship between art and food with an exhibition of 60 artists and a series of performances, workshops and events. Discover the full program here

Join California-based artist Tara de la Garza for a hands-on workshop exploring the creative potential of discarded plastic bags and packaging. Tara’s artistic practice is dedicated to reimagining single-use plastics, transforming everyday waste into objects of beauty and reflection.

Japan is celebrated for its culture of craftsmanship, resourcefulness, and recycling. In that spirit, this workshop invites participants to fold reclaimed fused plastic ‘pleather’ using traditional origami techniques to create illuminated lanterns and other folded forms. This workshop is designed as a collaborative exchange where everyone can learn from one another.

Please bring some soft plastic.

Tara de la Garza is a California-based artist whose work explores the environmental impact of single-use plastics and our culture of consumption. Using discarded bags, packaging, and other hard-to-recycle materials, she transforms waste into sculptures, installations, and functional objects that challenge perceptions of value and permanence.

As the Creative Director of Inventurous, a creative reuse nonprofit, Tara combines art, design, and environmental education to inspire new ways of thinking about waste. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the permanent collection of the Watson Library at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
